Diverticulitis is a disease where the inner lining of the large intestines or colon bulges out through the outer and muscular layer. These bulging or outpouchings are called diverticula. Diverticulitis is the inflammation of the of one or more diverticula. The risk of developing this disorder increases with age because by the age of 50, nearly 20 – 50 % of people suffer from some or the other diverticula. Though there are many foods that you need to avoid but the good news is that you have certain foods to eat with diverticulitis.

According to the American Dietetic Association, it is recommended that you consume 20 – 35 grams of fiber everyday.

  • The main dietary change for people suffering from diverticulitis is a high fiber diet because it adds more bulk to the stool.
  • This reduces the pressure over the colon and thereby eliminates waste by preventing the formation of diverticula.
  • You need to take fiber rich diet gradually because if you take suddenly then it could result in cramping, diarrhea and bloating.
  • A balanced diverticulitis diet has many advantages like it protects the rectum and colon from cancers.
  • It also has nutrients like Vitamin A, C, E and selenium that are useful in fighting cancer.
  • When you increase your fiber diet, you should keep in mind to drink at least 3 pints of water everyday.
  • Fiber that is not soluble requires fluid to form stools that can be passed easily.
  • Fiber supplements give up to 2 – 3.5 grams of fiber for every tablespoon that is mixed with eight ounces of water and then this mixture is taken.
  • Many doctors have suggested that you need to avoid foods with small seeds because these may get clogged in the diverticula, which can lead to inflammation.
  • Since, this had no evidence to prove this new theory and seeds in zucchini, strawberries, cucumbers, tomatoes, raspberries and poppy seeds are all part of diverticulitis diet. These are harmless as well.

  • Whole wheat pasta
  • Wheat germ
  • Dry barley
  • Oatmeal, grits or oat bran
  • Crisp breads or whole wheat crackers

  • Stone-ground cornmeal and buck wheat
  • Bran cereal products, whole grain and wheat
  • Bread, pancakes, pita bread, pastas, muffins and bagels and these can be prepared using whole grain or flour

Other Dietary Intake for Diverticulitis

Vegetables

: Vegetables like broccoli, asparagus, carrots,cabbage, brussels sprouts, greens like kale and beet greens, collards, green pepper, peas, onions, romaine and potatoes.

Fruit :

Fruits like apple, banana, blackberries, cherries, apricot, fig, dates, blueberries, nectarine, grapefruit, orange, pear, prune, pineapple and peach.

Milk or Dairy

: You can increase the fiber in cottage cheese or yogurt by adding whole bran or grain cereals and fresh fruits.

Meat

: Increase fiber in meat dishes like casseroles, meatloaf by adding 3 tsp of wheat bran.

Beans:

All peas and beans like baked beans, fava, kidney beans, lentils, garbanzo beans, aduki, split beans and pinto beans.

Fats and snacks:

Baked tortilla corn chips, whole wheat pretzels or mix made out of dried fruits. Cookies, breads and cakes made of fruits and bean dip.

A study stated that diet is the only way with which you can treat the initial stages of diverticulitis. But if the signs and symptoms does not reduce then you can consult a doctor for further treatment. Even if you are under medical treatment the diet plays a vital factor in the healing process.
